The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (Further Education and Skills) is a recognised qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers within a further educational setting and those looking to apply for QTLS on completion learners need to meet all the eligibility criteria set out by the Society for Education and Training.
Assessment
The qualification will be assessed through a combination of written essays, a portfolio of teaching evidence and observation of teaching or training. All units, assignments and learning materials for the course can be accessed through our online learning platform. Students have 12 months access to the online learning platform where they may study entirely at their own pace. Furthermore, learners will be observed for a total of 10 sessions (minimum 45 minutes) during the course to assess the practical elements of the qualification and complete a 30-minute professional discussion.
The sessions can be done on any topic, this should be the subject the student specialises in. Observations should be carried out in a suitable environment (such as a further education setting, adult learning centre or a club) by a qualified teacher. The total qualification time for this is 1200 hours.
Who should do this course?
This qualification is suitable for those who want the opportunity to explore underpinning theories, frameworks and research into effective teaching and learning alongside developing practical teaching skills. Furthermore, this course is also aimed at individuals who work or who want to work as teachers in the further education and skills sector. The qualification can also be ideal for those who are currently teaching and are seeking career progression in their area of work.
Learners who successfully complete this qualification will gain further knowledge on aspects of planning, delivering and assessing inclusive teaching and learning. Whilst doing this, students will learn about theories and principles in education and training and demonstrate them in their practice. Learners will also carry out research into professionalism in education and training and consider their impact on their role as a fully qualified teacher.

The eleven units that all learners must complete to gain this qualification are:

- Professional Development and Reflective Practice in Further Education
- Digital pedagogies for teaching and learning in further education
All learners must meet these entry requirements to be able to complete the course:
- All learners must have access to 250 hours of teaching in total, across 2 locations with 150 teaching, 20 hours of non-teaching practice and 20 hours of remote delivery.
- Students must be able to demonstrate skills in numeracy and literacy at a Level 2 standard
- You must be in-service or delivering sessions voluntarily – you will be observed in your workplace setting
- Good reading and writing skills in English
- Learners should provide a qualification for their specialist area at Level 3 or above, or a CPD plan showing that they are working towards such a qualification.
- Learners must have access to a qualified observer. This is someone who holds this qualification or an equivalent or higher.
- Learners must have access to support from two members of staff at their placement (subject specialist and local pastoral support mentor)
- Learners are required to supply a DBS certificate.
